A recent scandal has surrounded the younger brother of the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez. The judge in charge of the case suggested that the position in the Badajoz Provincial Council was created specifically for him, a statement that has been supported by the declaration of the Secretary General of the Socialist Party of Extremadura, Miguel Ángel Gallardo. This situation adds to other cases involving people close to the government leader, such as his wife, Begoña Gómez.
The Executive has defended that David Sánchez did not receive any preferential treatment in his hiring and that he was employed long before Pedro Sánchez assumed the presidency or led the PSOE. For his part, Minister Óscar López rejected this "mud machine strategy" that seeks to defame innocent people, comparing it to the situations of other politicians.
The investigation against David Sánchez began in June of last year and since then, according to government spokeswoman Pilar Alegría, he has been the subject of an unjust persecution due to his relationship with the president. Alegría defends the integrity of David Sánchez, highlighting his extensive resume and asserting that he obtained his position in the Provincial Council based on his own merits, without irregularities.
Various members of the Government have shown their support for David Sánchez, considering his resignation as a personal decision. The minister spokesperson highlighted that the Central Operational Unit has been clear in its investigations, stating that in this case as well as in that of Begoña Gómez, no evidence of irregularities has been found.
The judge in charge of the case asserts that David Sánchez's position was created by hand in 2017, based on rumors and false reports spread by far-right organizations. David Sánchez declared in January denying any irregularity in his hiring and faces accusations for several offenses related to Public Administration, Treasury, Influence Peddling, embezzlement, and malpractice.
