The Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain announced on Tuesday the list of nominees for the 40th Goya Awards. The awards ceremony will be held on February 28, 2026, in Barcelona, and the announcement was made by actors Toni Acosta and Arturo Valls, according to the Argentine News Agency. The film 'Sundays', directed by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, positioned itself as the big favorite by heading the nominations with 13 candidacies. Close behind was 'Sirât', by Oliver Laxe, with 11 nominations. On the other hand, titles such as 'Maspalomas', 'The Dinner' and 'Sorda' complete a strong group that reflects the aesthetic and thematic diversity of current Spanish cinema. In leading roles, names such as Patricia López Arnaiz, Ángela Cervantes, Mario Casas and Alberto San Juan stand out. The 2026 edition will also feature an Honorary Goya for veteran filmmaker Gonzalo Suárez, in recognition of his extensive artistic career. With 218 Spanish films released in 2025 eligible to compete, the nominations have already ignited the debate. As for 'Belén', the film directed and starring Dolores Fonziés, it is nominated for Best Ibero-American Film. In the Best Film category, one of the most anticipated, 'The Dinner', 'Sundays', 'Maspalomas', 'Sirât' and 'Sorda' will compete.
