The Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia has decided to follow the example of the British The Guardian and stop publishing news on its official accounts on a specific social network, considering that this platform has become "toxic." Like The Guardian, La Vanguardia has pointed out that the harms of staying on this social network outweigh the benefits at present.
La Vanguardia's decision is based on the fact that the social network in question has become a space for misinformation since the arrival of Elon Musk. The Barcelona newspaper has described the platform as a place where conspiracy theories and misinformation are echoed.
La Vanguardia has mentioned the recent electoral campaign in the United States and the falsehoods disseminated regarding climate events in Valencia as examples that support its decision. The newspaper has noted the presence of viral content promoting ideas that violate human rights, such as hatred towards ethnic minorities, misogyny, and racism on this social network.
Despite this measure, La Vanguardia has clarified that it will continue to follow people, entities, companies, and institutions on that social network to keep its readers informed about relevant messages and debates that arise in that space.
