The second day of Ferrari's testing in Barcelona was marked by the unfortunate incident involving Lewis Hamilton. The British driver lost control of his car and crashed hard into the barriers, causing considerable damage to the vehicle.
Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time Formula 1 champion, is adapting to Ferrari's SF-23 after 12 years with Mercedes. During the morning session, he had an accident while driving the Scuderia's car. Around 11 in the morning, Hamilton lost control of his vehicle in the final section of the Montmelo circuit and crashed into the protective barriers.
The driver emerged unscathed from the incident thanks to the effectiveness of the car's safety systems and the impact barriers. However, the SF-23 suffered significant damage to the suspension and various aerodynamic components, forcing the rescue teams to quickly transport it to the pits.
Ferrari's technicians, led by Matteo Togninalli, assessed the damage caused by the impact and analyzed the car's telemetry to understand the causes of the accident. Jerome D'Ambrosio, the team's deputy director, is investigating whether there was a technical failure or if the incident was due to human error or track conditions.
The accident interrupted Ferrari's work program. Charles Leclerc was supposed to take the wheel of the SF-23 in the afternoon, but the repair process will take several hours, delaying his return to the track. Additionally, Hamilton's adaptation plan to the Ferrari car, crucial for his familiarization with the Italian team after more than a decade at Mercedes, is also postponed.
