Southern Spain is in mourning after one of the most serious railway accidents in recent years. Near the city of Córdoba, two high-speed trains derailed, causing a massive collision. According to preliminary reports from the Guardia Civil, the accident has caused at least seven deaths. According to the Argentine News Agency, the number of victims could increase in the coming hours, as emergency services are trying to access areas of the trains where passengers are still trapped. The incident was triggered when a train from the private operator Iryo, traveling the route from Málaga to Madrid, derailed for reasons that are still under investigation. Firefighters, police patrols, and a fleet of ambulances were dispatched to the accident site to assist with the evacuation and transfer of the injured to nearby health centers. After derailing, the train crossed the adjacent track just as an Alvia-type train—designed to run on both high-speed and conventional tracks—was traveling from Madrid to Huelva. The impact caused the Alvia to also derail, leaving cars overturned and metal structures severely damaged. According to the Andalucía Información portal, among the dead are two passengers in the Iryo formation and three who were on the Alvia train. The emergency response in the area is total.
