Córdoba Launches Christmas Blood Donation Campaign

Córdoba's Transfusion Center calls on residents to donate blood and plasma in December to prevent a holiday shortage. Over 26,000 donations have been recorded in the province this year.

The province of Córdoba has recorded 26,559 blood, plasma, and other specialty donations so far this year (25,152 blood donations, 1,307 plasmapheresis, 97 plateletpheresis, as well as 3 autotransfusions and 134 bone marrow typed donors), as reported by the Junta on Wednesday in a press release. Therefore, the Córdoba Center for Transfusion, Tissues, and Cells (CTTC) is launching a special Christmas campaign with the goal of reaching 2,500 blood donations and 200 plasma donations.

The activity of the Tissue Bank in Córdoba, which, together with the Malaga center, centralizes all activity in Andalusia, has surpassed 1,300 grafts, according to the activity report of the Tissue Bank accumulated until November 29. In the Bone Bank area, 100 donations have been processed, from which 2,542 pieces have been distributed throughout Andalusía, with 842 bone pieces destined for Córdoba for surgical procedures. As for the Cornea area, 320 donations have been processed, obtaining 640 corneas, of which 427 have been distributed in health centers in Córdoba.

Regarding the amniotic membrane, 296 fragments have been obtained from eight donors, of which Córdoba received 45 fragments, mainly applied in areas such as ophthalmology and plastic and reconstructive surgery. This was pointed out by the territorial delegate for Health, María Jesús Botella, who added that «these data reflect a sustained performance in the activity of the Córdoba Transfusion and Tissue Center during this period».

However, she drew attention to the fact that «December represents a critical challenge since last year only 1,700 donations were registered». Our territory has reached 16,437 donors, a figure that remains stable compared to the previous year. Of these, 9,376 were men, 7,061 women, and there were 1,976 new donors. «That figure is below the hospital needs that increase during festivities, holiday travel, and seasonal illnesses», she warned. To prevent a repeat of an adverse scenario in the last period of the year and to close 2025 above last year's figures, a significant increase in the volume of donations is required this month.

Regarding cardiac valves, 53 hearts were received and 96 homografts were obtained, of which 11 were used at the University Hospital Reina Sofía. Finally, concerning the Skin Bank, it has accumulated 35,555 cubic centimeters of regenerated skin this year, from 28 donors and centralized in the Major Burns Unit of the University Hospital Virgen del Rocío. «These data demonstrate the commitment of the citizens of Córdoba and the professional teams to tissue donation, as well as the health impact that this activity generates in the hospitals of the province», concluded the delegate for Health and Consumption, María Jesús Botella.
