Córdoba Doctors Hold Historic Strike

Doctors across Spain, including in Córdoba, held a national strike against a new labor status project. The union reports 70% participation in hospitals and demands authorities address the staffing shortage issue.

The Córdoba Medical Union has led a national strike, which it described as historic, the first in 35 years. According to the union's president, Inmaculada Romero, over 177,000 doctors across Spain joined the strike, with around 2,500 participating in Córdoba and its province. The protest was against the draft Statutory Framework for the working conditions of healthcare personnel, being prepared by the Ministry of Health. According to the union, the strike had an average participation rate of 30% in primary care and up to 70% at the University Hospital Reina Sofía in Córdoba. «We are talking about health centers where 12 doctors should be working, but there are only five, without the staff being resized despite repeated warnings,» she emphasized. The union claims the strike demonstrated the collective strength of doctors and that the current situation is unsustainable. Meanwhile, regional authorities reported a 27% support rate for the strike across the province. «Official figures should be studied with caution,» Romero stated, pointing out that «minimum services» are functioning as «maximum services» in practice. As a result of the strike, the Ministry of Health has called the strike committee to negotiations scheduled for the 17th of this month.
