Two miners die in Asturias mine collapse

The government delegate in Asturias confirmed the death of two miners after a collapse at a mine in Vega de Rengos. The search for the third worker continues. Authorities expressed condolences to the victims' families.

The government delegate in Asturias, Adriana Lastra, has confirmed the death of two of the three miners trapped after the collapse at a mine in Vega de Rengos, in the Asturian municipality of Cangas del Narcea, and has informed that emergency services continue to search for the third person, still missing. Speaking to the media, Lastra reported that the body of the second missing mine worker has been found following the collapse. He was a 32-year-old resident of Cangas del Narcea. Hours earlier, the President of Asturias, Adrián Barbón, announced that the first person had been found, a 42-year-old resident of Villalbino (León). 'The death of Óscar, a resident of Cangas del Narcea, has been certified, and the Mine Rescue Brigade, along with Asturias firefighters and other mine personnel, are trying to recover the body of Nilson, who is currently missing,' Lastra continued in her explanation, without confirming a third death. The government delegate thanked the Mine Rescue Brigade, the Fire Department of Asturias, the 112 service, and the Civil Guard, which will take charge of the accident investigation. The 112 service also activated the Civil Guard and the Urgent Medical Attention Service (SAMU). This is a mine managed by the company TyC Narcea, whose activity was paralyzed by the Principality of Asturias at the beginning of April, after the accident that occurred on March 31st at the Cerredo mine (Degaña), in which five miners died and four were injured. From the very beginning, Asturias firefighters based in Cangas del Narcea, the Rescue Group on board the medicalized helicopter, as well as one of the multifunctional helicopters that transported the Mine Rescue Brigade, have been mobilized. Lastra also thanked the rapid intervention of both colleagues from the mine and all deployed personnel. She then called on the media to engage in 'reflection' at a time when 'a WhatsApp message ends up on television,' because when there is a fatal accident, 'families cannot find out' that their relatives have died through the media or a message on social networks. 'From the Government Delegation, from the Government of Spain, we send an embrace to the entire mining family, to the colleagues of Nilson and Óscar, of course, to Cangas del Narcea and to the municipality of Villablino as well,' added the socialist leader.
