Increase in Cargo Theft Challenges Spanish Transport Sector

Recent reports highlight a worrying trend of approximately 1,800 criminal incidents targeting logistics routes in Spain over the past 18 months, significantly impacting transport operators. This crisis has prompted industry leaders to urge the government to utilize Ciudad Real Airport for truck parking to enhance safety and operational efficiency.

In the last 18 months, around 1,800 criminal incidents have been reported on Spanish logistics routes, posing a serious challenge for carriers, manufacturers, and suppliers affected by these situations. The most vulnerable places to these acts are warehouses, distribution centers, and transport routes, where significant thefts result in losses exceeding 665,000 euros per incident.

According to a spokesperson, revitalizing the air cargo transit in the central-southern area of the peninsula, which is currently in a state of inactivity, could be beneficial by leveraging effective road transport logistics. The exponential increase in truck thefts poses a significant problem that requires urgent attention.

The Federation of Transport Businessmen of Goods of Castilla-La Mancha (Fetcam) has expressed its discontent with the government's proposal to convert Ciudad Real airport into an immigration reception center. Fetcam has proposed since 2013 to use the airport as a safe space for parking trucks, taking advantage of the available infrastructure at this location.

In response to the challenges faced by the goods transport sector, which include thefts, rising operating costs, and the potential early retirement of drivers, Fetcam underscores the need to find solutions to maintain the sustainability of the industry. This proposal for early retirement, while not opposed, raises the possibility of a driver shortage if a high percentage of them retire. It is estimated that losses in the sector since 2020 stand at around 55 million euros.
