The Government Council of Castilla-La Mancha has approved a cooperation agreement of 95 million euros with the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. This agreement aims to execute, finance, and operate the extension of water supply in Campo de Calatrava, Daimiel, and Ciudad Real from the Mancha Plain System. In the words of the Minister of Sustainable Development of Castilla-La Mancha, Mercedes Gómez, this project guarantees the water supply to the municipalities that need it most, under adequate conditions of quality and quantity.
Additionally, it is expected to ensure the safety supply in emergency situations for the municipalities of the Gasset Commonwealth, such as Ciudad Real, and neighboring municipalities like Miguelturra, Carrión de Calatrava, among others, benefiting about 100,000 inhabitants. The plan involves the construction of eight new branches with ductile iron pipes of various diameters and the management of eleven drinking water supply systems for 700,000 inhabitants of 240 municipalities by Water Infrastructure of Castilla-La Mancha.
According to the spokesperson for the Government of Castilla-La Mancha, Esther Padilla, the hydraulic works will also benefit localities in the provinces of Cuenca, Albacete, and Ciudad Real, favoring more than 70,000 inhabitants. The Minister highlighted that this project seeks to hydrologically regenerate the Natural Park of the Tablas de Daimiel by replacing the underground resources used in the supply with the resources from the Tajo-Segura aqueduct.
These works of 67 km of piping and eight new branches have an estimated duration of 2 years, and after being put into operation, they will be managed by Water Infrastructure of Castilla-La Mancha. In this regard, the connection to the Mancha Plain system from the Drinking Water Treatment Station (ETAP) of Ciudad Real and the La Atalaya reservoirs is planned. The project will also feature a co-management of the works and will be co-financed with European FEDER funds from both Castilla-La Mancha and state sources.
