The image of Christ of San Álvaro de Córdoba will preside for the third time the Via Crucis of the Group of Brotherhoods and Cofradías. This Christ, whose seat is in Santo Domingo, will be transferred to San Agustín to start the procession to the Cathedral of Córdoba from there. The selection of San Álvaro is due to the upcoming sixth centenary of the first prayer of the Via Crucis in the West, held in the sanctuary founded by San Álvaro in 1425.
The Group informed that David Pulido will be the foreman who will guide the Christ during the procession on March 8. Pulido is also the foreman of María Santísima Reina de los Mártires of Puente Genil. The decision was communicated to the corporations during the assembly in December 2024 and has been well received by the Congregation of the Dominican Fathers, custodians of Christ in Scala Coeli, and by the brotherhood of San Álvaro.
In previous years, the Christ of San Álvaro has served functions in various crews in the city. This year, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Via Crucis in the West, he will be honored by being taken from San Agustín to the Cathedral, thus reviving a tradition with profound significance for the city. The Via Crucis initiated by San Álvaro six centuries ago remains an important practice in the Holy Week of Córdoba.
In relation to this news, it should be noted that the first prayer of the Via Crucis in the West took place in 1427, marking a milestone in the tradition of Córdoba. The image of the Christ of San Álvaro has been a fundamental part of this tradition, and in the 1980s it was transferred to the Cathedral for the prayer of the stations.
