Italian Mafia Boss Arrested in Spain

An Italian mafia boss, accused of managing a cocaine trade in Rome, was arrested in Spain while trying to find a legitimate job at a job center. Giuseppe Rivieri, a 66-year-old leader of the 'Banda della Maranella' gang, was apprehended in the employment center in the resort of Estepona on the Costa del Sol. He had previously been arrested in 2018 on charges of drug trafficking and belonging to a criminal organization. After serving two years in prison in Spain, he was released, only to be arrested again last week. The police did not announce his arrest until Friday. The Spanish Civil Guard reported that Rivieri no longer lives in a luxury villa but now occupies a more modest apartment. In an attempt to leave his criminal life behind, he registered as a foreigner with the authorities and frequently visited the Estepona job center. In 2018, during an operation codenamed 'Maverick 2', Rivieri and 13 other individuals were arrested. Police seized 500 kilograms of hashish, six luxury cars, and a specially modified vehicle used to transport drugs from Spain to Italy. In Italy, police arrested 42 people suspected of links to the 'Banda della Maranella' gang and confiscated goods worth two million euros. Sources revealed that the gang collaborated with British drug dealers on the Costa del Sol to transport their hashish supplies from Spain to Italy. Police sources added that the gang used extreme violence to steal drugs from other criminal organizations. Two Italians from a rival gang were kidnapped and tortured for 24 hours in an attempt to find a drug stash. The drugs were transported in caravans driven by fake tourists from Spain to Italy.
