The debate in the Galician Parliament regarding the figure of Castelao has generated conflicting positions among the different political groups. While the Galician Nationalist Bloc defends that he should be recognized as the first president of Galicia in exile, the rest of the political parties are reluctant to grant him a title he never held in life.
During the session, the nationalist leader, Ana Pontón, highlighted the importance of Castelao in the history of Galicia and his role in the defense of the country's national rights. However, other parties like the PP and the PSOE opposed proclaiming Castelao as president, arguing that he was never democratically elected to that position.
The proposal presented by the BNG included declaring the year 2025 as the Year of Castelao, as well as annulment of the political responsibilities file. However, when trying to also include the proclamation of Castelao as president, the other political groups abstained or voted against this measure.
Additionally, the historical relevance of Castelao and his role in exile, where he continued to fight for the recognition of Galician rights, was debated. Despite the discrepancies, his political legacy and struggle in defense of his land were acknowledged.
In this regard, some deputies compared Castelao to international figures like Gandhi or Charles de Gaulle, highlighting his commitment and integrity in defending his people. However, there were also criticisms towards those who attempt to use his figure opportunistically, without respecting his political legacy and his commitment to Galicia.
Finally, the vote left nationalists alone in their attempt to proclaim Castelao as president, highlighting the differences of opinion among the different political groups regarding this sensitive issue in Galician history.
