Debate over Macro-Farms in Spain's Agriculture Committee

José Antonio Palomo from Vox criticized the socialist proposal to halt new macro-farms, emphasizing the pork sector's economic importance. Political tensions rise as parties clash over agricultural policies and environmental concerns in Ribera del Duero.

The deputy José Antonio Palomo from Vox described the socialist proposal to establish a six-year moratorium on the installation or expansion of pig farms and large farms in Spain as "ideological delirium", a sector that generates 1.3 billion euros annually. In the Agriculture and Livestock Commission of the Cortes, the PP and Vox groups rejected this proposal, while UPL-Soria Ya and Mixto voted in favor of it.

The popular Lorena de la Fuente pointed out that in 2023 and 2024, no authorizations were granted for new installations of this type, although there are five files in process in the Ribera del Duero. In addition, of the 94 municipalities of the Denomination of Origin, 66 do not have pig farms. De la Fuente advocated for equitable support for both strategic sectors and noted that some wineries are located on rural land.

The socialist deputy Luis Briones attributed the increase in pig farms and protests in the Ribera del Duero to the climate of "permissiveness" established in the modification of the Environmental Prevention Law of 2020 by the Junta. According to Briones, in one year, 21,000 more animals were added to these farms, and 57 new operations were opened in the region.

José Ramón García from UPL-Soria Ya warned about the risk of having more pigs than humans in villages if clear legislation that prioritizes citizens' rights over those of large farms is not implemented. Amid the controversy, the socialist proposal for a moratorium did not receive the necessary support in the Agriculture and Livestock Commission of the Cortes.
