Doctor Sentenced for Sexual Abuse of Patients

A family doctor in Las Palmas has been sentenced to 29.5 years for sexually abusing 26 patients between 2010 and 2019, raising serious health and ethical concerns.

The Sixth Section of the Provincial Court of Las Palmas has sentenced a family doctor working at the Canalejas Health Center in the Gran Canaria capital, linked to the Canary Health Service, to 29 and a half years in prison for sexually abusing 26 patients. The sentence states that the professional continuously committed sexual abuses against 26 women during consultations between November 2010 and January 2019.

The doctor was found guilty of 10 continuous crimes of sexual abuse and 16 crimes of sexual abuse for actively participating in the acts, with the intention of satisfying his sexual instincts. He used the excuse of giving massages to the patients to rub his penis against their bodies or hands, and even touched the breasts of some women.

The sentence highlights the reparative effort by the doctor by paying more than 100,000 euros in compensation, greatly exceeding the amounts requested, making the full payment in advance. Despite claiming psychiatric alterations in the form of frontotemporal dementia, the court did not consider this mitigating, acknowledging that the capacity to act, understand, and will may have been affected, but the degree of influence at the time of committing the abuses could not be determined.
