Family reports the lack of socio-healthcare place in Gran Canaria

Ana, 33 years old and with an 84% disability, has been waiting for a socio-healthcare place for 12 years. The lack of response worsens her situation and affects her family.

Ana, a 33-year-old woman with an 84% disability residing in Gran Canaria, has been waiting for a social-healthcare spot for 12 years. Until she was 21, she was at San Juan de Dios, where she completed her schooling, and since then, she has been waiting for a spot that has not yet arrived.

The spokesperson counselor of Coalición Canaria in the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Vidina Cabrera, along with Ana's parents, Asención Santana and Juan Vega, have publicly denounced the situation. It has been 4 months since they informed the counselor of the Government of Social Policy, Accessibility, Equality and Diversity, Isabel Mena, about the serious situation, and there is still no solution.

Ana's mother, after two years of medical leave, now has early retirement. The family has expressed that the lack of a social-healthcare spot has affected not only Ana, who is experiencing regression, but also them, causing enormous work and emotional harm.

The situation has led the family to despair, as they cannot reconcile work and family life and are affected both emotionally and psychologically. Despite having another son with a disability who has a social-healthcare spot, Ana has been excluded from this support for over a decade.

The family has expressed their frustration at the lack of response from the competent authorities. They have voiced their dissatisfaction with the inaction that unnecessarily prolongs Ana’s wait. Despite meetings with technicians and the manager of the IAS in which a prompt solution was promised, the situation has not changed.

Counselor Vidina Cabrera has urged the authorities to take urgent measures to provide Ana with the social-healthcare spot she urgently needs. The family is not willing to wait any longer and demands a prompt resolution to this alarming situation.
