The internal process of the PSOE in León has been a real whirlwind of tensions and conflicts that date back several years. It all started in an electoral contest where José Antonio Diez, Diego Moreno, and Javier Alfonso Cendón faced off, a contest that quickly turned into a struggle between the latter and Diez, with Cendón emerging as the narrow winner.
Cendón represented the establishment sector aligned with Pedro Sánchez, while Diez was considered a stronghold of Leónist socialism, deeply rooted in his land. Since then, the gap between these factions has widened, with Diez standing out for defending the interests of León and its people, earning him his reelection as mayor in 2023.
Diez's entry into the Mayor's Office marked the beginning of a new phase where clashes between the party's different factions intensified. The approval of a motion for autonomy for León in 2019 sharpened tensions, which were reflected in the struggles for control of the local PSOE.
Amid all this turmoil, Cendón emerged as the leader of León's socialists, and the internal dispute with Diez became increasingly irregular. It even reached the point where an alternative to Diez was proposed to lead the local PSOE in León, further deepening the existing rifts in the party.
What initially seemed to be an attempt to unify the party under Cendón's leadership turned into an open confrontation between the two factions, with accusations flying and tensions rising. Diez's victory in this scenario marked an irreconcilable divide between the two currents, setting a milestone in his position within the party and in the León political sphere.
Despite the brief calm experienced after these events, divisions within the PSOE of León remain latent, with sanctions against members and constant friction between the opposing factions. Diego Moreno's attempt to compete against Diez in the internal contest only added more fuel to the fire, revealing the deep cracks that still persist within the party. And amid this scenario, Carlos Martínez, general secretary of the PSCL, preferred to stay on the sidelines, aware of the thorny confrontations prevailing in the organization.
