Economist Gonzalo Bernardos, during his participation in the program La Sexta Xplica, expressed his opinion on the importance of taxes for social welfare. In a critical speech, he mentioned the case of individuals who evade the tax system by moving to Andorra in search of lower tax burdens. Bernardos emphasized that those who benefit from the public system without contributing to its financing pose a threat to the sustainability of services like healthcare, education, and security.
In contrast to these actions, the economist defended prominent business figures like Amancio Ortega and Juan Roig, who remain in Spain paying their taxes and contributing to the social welfare model. In this regard, he highlighted that taxes are essential for financing quality public healthcare and education, as well as other essential services that benefit society as a whole.
During his intervention, Bernardos shared a personal experience about the importance of taxes. He referred to the case of his daughter, who was saved by public healthcare despite the high tax burden he bears. In this context, he pointed out that taxes are not only necessary for the functioning of healthcare and educational services, but also contribute to establishing a social safety net that protects all citizens.
The economist highlighted the stance of a representative of YouTubers who, after being diagnosed with an illness, decided to move to Andorra for a kidney transplant, criticizing this practice as a form of tax evasion. He emphasized that, despite the high sums he pays to the Treasury, he believes that the Spanish tax system provides significant benefits in return, ensuring the financing of quality public services for the population.
