The National Police arrested a man and a woman suspected of committing three violent robberies against taxi drivers in downtown Madrid, as well as a car theft. According to police sources, the couple approached the taxi drivers on the street, and upon arriving at their destination, they intimidated the driver from the back seat with a knife to force them to hand over their valuables. They then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
After a month of investigations, the authorities managed to apprehend these two individuals, a 36-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, who were taken to the district police station and later brought before a judge as alleged perpetrators of the mentioned crimes.
Additionally, one of the incidents involved the couple taking over the taxi when the driver had to briefly exit the vehicle, taking control of the steering wheel and driving away with it. These criminal acts add to a series of assaults and robberies against taxi drivers that have been recorded in the capital recently.
In a statement, it was noted that, although there are no official figures on the number of assaults against taxi drivers at the national level, this case adds to the concerning list of similar incidents. Last October, a taxi driver was murdered in Alcalá de Henares because the customer did not accept the price of the fare.
The vulnerability of taxi drivers in these situations has generated calls for attention. A representative from the sector expressed the need to employ all available resources to ensure the safety of taxi drivers, highlighting the importance of addressing this issue. The situation underscores the need to address these situations to guarantee the safety of workers and users of the taxi service in the city.
