Spanish philosopher and writer Fernando Savater expressed his concern about the possibility that Europe might allow Ukraine to be mutilated by an invader, which, in his opinion, would lead to the sinking of the European Union. In an interview conducted in Madrid, Savater mentioned that if Donald Trump abandons Ukraine by pushing it towards a ceasefire with the loss of parts of its territory, it would be crucial for the European Union to take responsibility for increasing its military aid and support to Ukrainians to avoid a collapse.
Regarding Donald Trump's role and his impact on the European Union, Savater emphasized the importance of Europe not relying solely on the United States and taking steps to strengthen its position. He referred to the need to increase defense spending and not neglect security, noting that Spain is the country that contributes the least to European defense. Savater considered that Trump, by presenting himself as a clear antagonist, could be an opportunity for the EU by removing the notion that the United States will solve its problems.
Savater criticized the Spanish government's policy regarding public spending, mentioning that investment in defense and real needs of the country should be prioritized instead of allocating resources to maintain power through vote-buying. He expressed his concern about the situation in Ukraine and the stance Trump might adopt by recognizing the Russian invasion of Ukrainian territories, which he considered a monstrous deficit for the region. In this regard, Savater urged Europe to increase its support for Ukraine and not allow the current situation to affect the future of upcoming generations.
