Tensions Rise Over the Historical Significance of the Real Casa de Correos

Political tensions escalate in Madrid as the regional government defends the Real Casa de Correos against the central government's plans to label it a 'Place of Memory,' highlighting the historical controversies surrounding the building.

The regional government of Madrid, led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has expressed its firm decision to defend the interests of the people of Madrid and has requested the government of Pedro Sánchez not to use the Royal Post House as a shield to cover up cases of corruption or to divert attention from its institutional political weakness.

In response, the government delegate, Francisco Martín, has urged Ayuso to abandon what he calls 'permanent insubordination.' For her part, the president of the Community of Madrid has rejected any attempt to identify the headquarters of the regional presidency with Francoism, after learning of the ministry's intentions to place a plaque on the building as a 'Place of Memory.'

The Community has argued that the Royal Post House has a 250-year history and rejects the central government's intention to relate it exclusively to a specific era. Furthermore, the Madrid government considers that the law passed in the Assembly to protect the building is part of its competencies to preserve regional heritage.

The Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, headed by Ángel Víctor Torres, considers that the Madrid law protecting the Post House is unconstitutional due to invading competencies. It has urged the Community to negotiate before resorting to the Constitutional Court, with a deadline until February 26, though the willingness of both parties to reach an agreement seems complicated.

According to the minister, denying the past of the Royal Post House as a place of torture and suffering contradicts the history known by all Madrileños. The tension between the regional and central government is increasing, making it clear that the political battle is at its peak.
