Podemos Leader Addresses Sexual Harassment Allegations

Ione Belarra, General Secretary of Podemos, speaks out on sexual harassment allegations against Juan Carlos Monedero, stressing the party's response and victim prioritization. She defends not requiring self-criticism.

The Secretary General of Podemos, Ione Belarra, presented herself before the media in the Congress of Deputies to address the accusations of sexual harassment against Juan Carlos Monedero. She pointed out that Monedero was removed from the public and private activities of the party as soon as they became aware of the testimonies. She criticized the lack of attention to the victims amid the media storm unleashed by the case.

Belarra defended her party's actions and rejected the need for self-criticism, although she urged the media to reflect on their coverage of the issue, prioritizing the victims. She refused to confirm whether Monedero participated in recent decisions or public acts of the party. She highlighted that Monedero had not held positions since 2015 and left the party's foundation in 2023, but emphasized that all protocols were activated upon learning of the complaints.

The leader of Podemos urged respect for the victims and their processes, criticizing the patriarchal justice in Spain. She did not engage in self-criticism but asked the media to reflect. It was mentioned that Monedero was reported by a student at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he is a professor. The crisis coincides with the internal campaign of Podemos and the upcoming citizen assembly.

Belarra did not manage to clear all doubts about the case and the party's actions, reiterating that the corresponding protocols were activated. She defended herself by stating that they acted correctly and ensured that the victims requested discretion. When questioned about her previous behavior, she appeared offended and indicated that being affectionate does not imply granting a position in the party. Belarra's appearance took place after three days of intense debate and controversy on the subject.
