The alleged lies related to the statement by the Secretary General of Podemos, Ione Belarra, regarding the supposed separation of Juan Carlos Monedero as soon as news of matters related to his sexual conduct emerged are generating controversy. According to sources from ABC, Monedero has sent messages to his political circle warning that he possesses screenshots that contradict the version Podemos is trying to disseminate regarding the sexual scandals involving him, revealed by the newspaper.
In those messages, Monedero claims to have evidence on his phone that shows Pablo Iglesias and Irene Montero would be lying about the tensions with the party, especially since spring 2023. Monedero, a co-founder of Podemos, seems unwilling to be sidelined from political life or the party he helped create, suggesting that he might expose such evidence if necessary to disprove what he considers falsehoods from Iglesias and Montero.
The real reason for Monedero's separation from the Institute of Republic and Democracy, the party's foundation, before the general elections of 2023, would not be related to accusations of inappropriate behavior in the sexual realm, as claimed by Podemos's leadership, but to public differences regarding the attitude towards Sumar and its candidate, Yolanda Díaz. Monedero has also been affected in his academic work, as he has been temporarily relieved of teaching at the Complutense University of Madrid.
In the context of these disputes, Monedero has denounced in a video and an article that we are living in an "era of lies and 'fakes'" where politics can reach extremes of vileness. He alludes to possible actors, such as Juanma del Olmo, involved in a discrediting campaign against him for his conciliatory stance towards Sumar, while warning about "civil death" as a form of persecution. Monedero is expected to speak publicly about these events and attribute what happened to a strategy to weaken Podemos at a time of fluctuation in the polls. The uncertainty now lies in whether Podemos will decide to permanently distance Monedero or allow him to remain in their ranks.
