Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller Runs for Spanish Nationality

According to high-level sources from the Spanish government, it was revealed that Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, wife of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is applying for Spanish nationality through the Democratic Memory Law promoted in 2022 by President Pedro Sánchez. This law facilitates grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Spanish citizens obtaining nationality, and Gutiérrez Müller meets the requirements through both maternal and paternal lines.

Milton Merlo, a journalist for ABC in Spain, confirmed that the verification of this naturalization process was carried out in Madrid by officials close to the Spanish executive power. One of the fundamental requirements is to swear loyalty to the Constitution and to the Spanish Crown, which has generated controversy due to Gutiérrez Müller's background with the monarchy.

Gutiérrez Müller's decision to obtain Spanish nationality has sparked divided opinions. Some believe it is driven by personal or academic reasons, while others see it as a political contradiction. Although there was an attempt to restore dialogue between Mexico and Spain, historical tensions weighed more.

In 2019, Gutiérrez Müller sent a letter to King Felipe VI demanding an apology for the conquest, which caused a deterioration in bilateral relations. Despite this, it is mentioned that the former first lady has always felt an affinity for Europe in general and for Spain in particular, as confirmed by the ABC correspondent.
