Spanish Judge Requests Emails in Investigation

A Spanish judge investigating potential wrongdoing by Begoña Gómez, wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has again demanded all emails from the official presidential account since 2018. The government and opposition have different views on the legality of these actions.

Pedro Sánchez's circle reiterated that there is no wrongdoing and questioned the investigation, while opposition sectors demanded broader explanations and accused the government of a lack of transparency. The judge insisted that his requests are lawful and respond exclusively to the need to verify specific facts, without advancing on unnecessary invasive measures. The request is part of a judicial investigation aimed at clarifying possible irregularities in the use of public resources and institutional relations.

In a recent ruling, the magistrate again requested digital documentation, which he described as 'scant cooperation' from both the investigated party and Sánchez himself, considering the required information essential for clarifying the facts. The objective is to determine if there were missions, meetings, or activities that could be related to the investigated facts. The judge defended the proportionality of his measures and rejected versions that classify them as excessive.

According to the judge, access to official emails would allow reconstructing contacts, management, and potential influences linked to the professional activity of Gómez. In parallel, the judge formally requested the Ministry of the Interior to report whether Begoña Gómez made official or private trips to countries such as the Dominican Republic, Congo, Russia, and other international destinations, as well as the dates, characteristics, and possible companions of those travels.

In this sense, he emphasized that ordering the search of the president's wife's private home 'would indeed be a disproportionate measure,' clearly distinguishing between reasonable investigative procedures and actions that could violate fundamental rights. The case has caused a significant political and media impact in Spain, as it directly involves the prime minister's family circle. The investigation continues in the instruction phase, pending the submission of the requested information by the required bodies to assess the next procedural steps.
