Julio Iglesias Sues Media Outlet for 'Journalistic Setup'

Spanish singer Julio Iglesias has filed a lawsuit against elDiario.es, its director Ignacio Escolar, and four other responsible parties of the digital newspaper. He accuses them of orchestrating a «journalistic setup» against him, based on a complaint of sexual abuse by two former employees at his residence in the Dominican Republic, which was archived by the Prosecutor's Office for lack of jurisdiction.

«The facts reported are not the result of an isolated or specific event, but are part of a genuine campaign of discrediting and media lynching, carried out through various coordinated means and through the systematic publication of content on successive days, in which the damage caused is intensified,» the singer states in his 33-page lawsuit, which EFE has had access to.

The lawsuit, a preliminary step to filing a private accusation for defamation with publicity and slander, «without prejudice to possible liability for other criminal offenses,» has been filed with the Court of First Instance of Madrid (civil section) and requests the appearance of the defendants for a conciliation hearing.

The lawyer demands that to avoid the filing of a private accusation, they «explicitly recognize the illicit conduct and the damage caused, putting an end to the grave and constant violation of the fundamental right to honor, personal and family privacy, one's own image, and the right to the presumption of innocence» of the singer.
