Pedro Sánchez Will Not Attend Madrid Assembly Investigation

The Spanish government has ruled out President Pedro Sánchez attending the inquiry commission in Madrid about preferential treatment claims against his wife. Government sources affirm they are not legally obliged to attend these inquiries.

The Government has informed that President Pedro Sánchez will not attend the investigation committee of the Assembly of Madrid that will investigate possible favoritism between the Complutense University and his wife, Begoña Gómez. This comes after the Popular Party of Isabel Díaz Ayuso included Sánchez in the list of individuals who must appear.

In this regard, sources from Moncloa have stated that government members have no legal obligation to attend investigation committees of the regional Parliaments. They recalled the case of Mariano Rajoy, who also did not attend a summons in the Parliament of Catalonia.

The Executive has supported this decision by arguing that several reports from the Council of State exempt government members from appearing in investigation committees of the Assemblies of the autonomous communities. Reference has been made to a report from April 25, 2019, related to the summons of government members before the Catalan Parliament.

In response to the request from the PP of Madrid, Moncloa has described this action as destined to fail. They indicated that Isabel Díaz Ayuso's intention is to discredit Alberto Núñez Feijóo as the opposition leader to the government, whom they describe as incompetent and ineffective.
