The young winger of Barcelona in Spain, Lamine Yamal, was the victim of racist insults during his team's 4-0 victory over Real Madrid in El Clásico last Saturday at the Santiago Bernabéu. The 17-year-old player scored a goal in the match, becoming the youngest player to score in a clásico.
La Liga issued a statement announcing its intention to report the discrimination suffered by Yamal. The Spanish organization reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating racist and hateful behavior both inside and outside stadiums, stating that there is no place for such behavior in sports.
For its part, Real Madrid also responded to what happened in its stadium after the defeat against Barcelona. The Madrid club strongly condemned any manifestation of racism, xenophobia, or violence in football and sports and announced an investigation to identify the few fans who insulted Yamal during the match.
"The Club firmly condemns any type of behavior involving racism, xenophobia, or violence in football and sports, and deeply regrets the insults that a few fans made last night at one of the corners of the stadium," stated the official communication from Real Madrid. Furthermore, the institution announced the opening of an investigation to locate those responsible for the insults and take appropriate disciplinary and legal measures.
