Violent Protests Erupt in Madrid

Violent clashes occurred during a far-right demonstration in Madrid, leading to panic and injuries at local establishments. Police arrived late to the scene as demonstrators clashed with protestors.

Approximately at 8:30 PM, a group of violent individuals began to cause disturbances in a bar located on Duque de Osuna Street by throwing chairs, tables, and glasses. The customers on the terrace immediately sought refuge inside the establishment, believing they would be safer there.

The police arrived at the scene about an hour after the disturbances started. Last Saturday, during a demonstration by an ultraright group from Spain Square to Ferraz, a brawl broke out. Journalists and photographers, trying to escape from the attackers, ran toward the establishment for shelter, not realizing they were attracting the violent individuals to the location.

The march continued along Princesa Street with participants chanting slogans like "Screw the red who doesn’t bounce!", "Spain, Christian and not Muslim", "Here are the nationalists" or "Terrorist journalists". About 2000 demonstrators caused altercations in the area that included assaults, burning containers, and throwing objects.

The Mexican restaurant La Venganza de Malinche was one of the establishments affected by the disturbances. Employees and customers experienced moments of fear with the arrival of the violent individuals, who caused damage to the premises. Despite calls for help, medical and police services took time to arrive, forcing the people present to care for each other.

Amid the confusion and the effect of pepper spray, both workers and customers, including minors and a baby, took refuge at the back of the bar. Employees acted quickly to protect everyone present and prevent further damage to the establishment. The rapid response of the staff prevented serious injuries from occurring.

The situation inside the establishment turned chaotic with the entry of the violent individuals, who broke glass doors, tables, chairs, and caused damage to the floor. The terrified patrons took shelter in a safe area of the restaurant, even moving a baby to the storage room due to the presence of pepper spray in the air. The employees closed the external shutter to protect everyone present from further attacks within just seconds of confusion and violence.
