In the draw for the semifinals of the Copa del Rey held on Wednesday, the matchups between Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid were defined, as well as between Real Sociedad and Real Madrid. The Ciudad del Fútbol of the Royal Spanish Football Federation in Las Rozas was the venue for the definitions.
In 25 previous encounters in the Cup, Barcelona has an advantage over Atlético de Madrid, with twelve victories compared to eight wins for the Madrid team and five draws. On the other hand, Real Sociedad and Real Madrid have faced each other seven times in the competition, with the Basque side winning five times.
Last season, Real Sociedad defeated Real Madrid 3-4 in a quarterfinal match. Former players Pedja Mijatovic and Xavi Prieto were in charge of conducting the draw for the semifinals.
For these stages, unlike the previous rounds, the matches will be played over two legs. Barcelona and Real Sociedad will be the hosts for the first legs on February 25 and 26. The second legs will be played in Madrid, at the Santiago Bernabéu and the Metropolitano, on April 1 and 2, respectively.
The final will be held on April 26 at the Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville. This season marks the second time that Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid, Real Sociedad, and Real Madrid coincide in the semifinals of the Cup, the previous one being in the 2013-2014 season.
Historically, Real Madrid is the current leader of LaLiga, while Real Sociedad is seventh in the table, four points away from the European spots.
