Forward Julián Álvarez had converted the penalty, but the referee deemed that he executed it with both feet, so he decided to invalidate it.
After the score of 1-0 in regulation time and 2-2 on aggregate, the Madrid derby was decided from the penalty spot. Kylian Mbappé scored for Real Madrid and Alexander Sorloth scored for Atlético.
Jude Bellingham scored another goal for Real Madrid, and it was Julián Álvarez's turn. Despite stumbling on the shot with his right foot, he managed to place the ball close to the center of the crossbar. However, Real Madrid players claimed that the Argentine had shot with both feet, pressing the referee to cancel the conversion.
Finally, referee Marciniak reversed his decision and dismissed Álvarez's goal, giving the advantage to Real Madrid in the series, which ended up winning 4-2 and qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
