Real Madrid, La Liga of Spain, and the national government condemned the racist insults directed at Lamine Yamal during Saturday's clásico. The 17-year-old forward celebrated in front of Madrid fans, which apparently provoked gestures that triggered xenophobic insults.
"The club unequivocally condemns any behavior that involves racism, xenophobia, or violence in football and in sports, and deeply regrets the insults that a few fans uttered last night at one of the corners of the stadium," stated Madrid.
La Liga of Spain will denounce the "intolerable racist behaviors" and the Commission responsible for combating violence, racism, and other crimes in sports will meet to address the incident.
Real Madrid reported that it has initiated an investigation to identify the perpetrators of the insults and take appropriate disciplinary and legal measures.
Barcelona's 4-0 victory in the clásico left the Catalan club with a six-point lead over Madrid at the top of the tournament after 11 rounds. Real Madrid has been vocal in the fight against racist insults, particularly towards their Brazilian forward Vinicius Júnior, who has also been the target of discriminatory acts in previous matches, including at Barcelona's Camp Nou.
"In sports, there is no place for this scourge," emphasized the state’s Superior Sports Council while strongly condemning the "unacceptable" insults towards Yamal after he scored Barcelona's third goal.
