Malaga-Costa del Sol airport is experiencing significant growth due to the dynamism of the province, but it lacks investments and projects from the government to cope with its increasing activity. This was expressed by Mario Cortes of the Popular Party, who highlighted the need for the government to intervene and execute the expansion and northern access to the airport, emphasizing that it is crucial for the mobility and development of Malaga and Andalusia.
The exponential increase in the number of passengers traveling through the airport has led to saturation at the only existing access, creating complications both in the infrastructure and the city. The project to construct a highway access to the airport, which would connect with the ring road to Malaga, has been hindered by the return of expropriated land. This situation has raised concerns about mobility and traffic congestion in the area.
The northern access to Malaga Airport is a key project to improve connectivity between the Guadalhorce Valley and the Costa del Sol, as well as to reduce congestion at the entrance to Malaga city. Although the project was tendered in 2017, its execution has been consistently postponed, causing discontent among the population and local authorities. The lack of progress on this vital infrastructure for the region has been pointed out as a grievance by the government.
The return of expropriated land due to governmental inaction has generated uncertainty about the viability and future of the project. Despite efforts to advocate for the execution of the northern access to the airport, the lack of concrete progress from central authorities has caused significant delays in a project of vital importance for mobility and the development of the region.
