Institutional Meeting in Mérida on the Future of Almaraz

The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and her counterpart in Extremadura, María Guardiola, will hold an institutional meeting next week for Extremadura-Madrid, with the Almaraz nuclear power plant as a shared concern in the background. This situation represents a challenge for both regions, according to sources from Madrid.

Ayuso will travel to Mérida on Monday and Tuesday accompanied by members of the Governing Council, including ministers from various areas. The Community of Madrid emphasizes the critical importance of the decision regarding the closure of Almaraz, highlighting its impact on the electricity supply and regional economic development.

During the meeting, various programs and actions related to economic, social, and cultural aspects are expected to be discussed with the Extremaduran government. Among the topics to be addressed are healthcare, dependency, education, housing, transportation, research, digitalization, administrative modernization, culture, tourism, among other areas.

Additionally, the agenda includes a visit to the Almaraz plant on Tuesday, which is scheduled to cease operations between 2027 and 2028 by the central government.
