Spanish Teacher Fugitive Arrested in Cuba

A Spanish teacher, sentenced for raping a student, has been arrested in Cuba after a five-month manhunt. Cuban authorities are prepared to extradite him to Spain despite the lack of a formal treaty.

A Spanish teacher, sentenced to over 13 years in prison for raping a student, has been arrested in Cuba five months after his escape. Martiño Ramos Soto, who tried to build a new life in Havana, was detained on November 21. Despite the lack of an extradition treaty between Spain and Cuba, the island's authorities are 'very willing' to hand him over to the Spanish authorities. The arrest came after Spanish law enforcement tracked his route through Portugal, Brazil, Peru, and Cuba. In Cuba, he behaved suspiciously, attempting to gain residency through a sham marriage. He was arrested by Cuban police and now awaits extradition. With his capture, his victim and her family can now see a glimmer of hope. 'When Cuba resolves this, it will communicate it to the Ministry of Justice; this body will inform us, and we will organize his trip to Spain,' Interpol sources told ABC. Spanish and Cuban authorities are handling the bureaucratic procedures for his extradition, but sources say the process could be expedited if Martiño himself agrees to it. He was convicted for the sadistic and repeated rape of a minor student over several years.
