New Vigilance Campaign for School Transport Safety

A campaign begins to verify the safety of school transport vehicles in Toledo, focusing on guidelines for drivers and vehicle conditions. The initiative aims to protect vulnerable students, ensuring all requirements are met. Authorities will monitor adherence to speed limits and prevent distractions. The campaign runs until November 22, enhancing safety in school transport.

The General Directorate of Traffic begins a new surveillance campaign from November 20 to 22. During this period, road agents will focus on verifying the technical and safety conditions of vehicles, as well as the special requirements for drivers. This time, the focus will be on ensuring the safety of school transport vehicles, which carry minors, one of the most vulnerable groups in society.

In the province of Toledo, more than 350 daily routes are launched to transport over 10,000 schoolchildren to their educational centers. 90% of students use these buses for excursions or sports activities throughout the school year. The DGT emphasizes the importance of collaboration from educational centers and parent associations in the hiring of the routes.

Since October 20, 2007, registered buses must have retention systems installed as mandatory. It will be verified that they have the necessary authorizations and documents to provide the service, and special control will be placed on the speed and distractions of drivers.

Side collisions and rear-enders account for 40% of the accidents involving these vehicles. By law, since 2013, all new vehicles must be equipped with emergency braking systems that automatically activate in the event of detecting a potential collision.

In September 2024, there were 678 active buses in the region, of which approximately 57% had more than 50 seats. During the campaign, alcohol and drug tests will be conducted among school transport drivers. Traffic agents of the Civil Guard and local police will intensify inspections in their respective areas of competence.
