Spain to play Serbia friendly after Finalissima cancellation

The Spanish national team, European champions, will face Serbia in a friendly match on March 27 at La Ceramica stadium in Villarreal. Spain to play Serbia friendly after Finalissima cancellation

Spain's national football team, the European champions, will play an international friendly match against Serbia on March 27. This match replaces the 'Finalissima' against Argentina, the Copa America winners, which was canceled due to the situation in the Middle East. The match will take place at 'La Ceramica' stadium in Villarreal during the upcoming international window (March 23-31), as announced by the Spanish Football Federation. The 'Finalissima' match between the European and South American champions was canceled after failing to reach an agreement on an alternative venue. UEFA announced on Sunday the cancellation of the match due to the ongoing war in the Middle East, stating that 'it was not possible to reach an agreement with Argentina on an alternative date.' The local organizing committee in Qatar also canceled the six friendly matches scheduled in Doha between March 26 and 31. UEFA had proposed two solutions: to hold the 'Finalissima' at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid, or to play the match as a two-legged tie, with the first leg in Madrid on March 27 and the second in Buenos Aires later, before Euro 2028 and the Copa America. However, these proposals were also not accepted. UEFA also suggested playing a single match at a neutral venue in Europe on March 27 or 30, but the Argentine Football Association said it could no longer play on the previously scheduled date and could only play on March 31. UEFA added: 'And, to UEFA's regret, the current edition of the Finalissima has been canceled.' The 'Finalissima' was originally scheduled to be held at Lusail Stadium, which hosted the 2022 World Cup final, where Argentina defeated France to win the title. In turn, the local organizing committee in Qatar announced in a statement the cancellation of the Qatar Football Festival 'due to ongoing disruptions to air travel and travel restrictions that continue to affect the ability of many fans, players, and officials to travel.' As a result, Spain's second match in Qatar against Egypt was also canceled, leaving the European champions without a second friendly match in this international preparation window for the 2026 World Cup.
