Human saliva bacteria can weaken peanut allergy

A recent study shows that bacteria naturally present in human saliva and the small intestine can break down proteins that cause severe peanut allergies, potentially leading to new treatments.

Human saliva bacteria can weaken peanut allergy

Researchers from universities in Madrid, Spain, and McMaster in Canada have identified two types of bacteria, 'Rothia' and 'Staphylococcus,' that can break down allergy-causing proteins in peanuts. However, a recent study found that some bacteria naturally present in human saliva and the small intestine help reduce the severity of this allergy. 'Science Alert' reports that millions of children and adults worldwide live in daily fear of peanut allergies, where even a small bite becomes a life-threatening risk. These proteins are what trigger the life-threatening excessive allergic reaction, including throat swelling and a drop in blood pressure in cases of anaphylactic shock.
