First Step Toward Reconciliation: Spain Acknowledges Historical Injustice to Mexico

International relations between Mexico and Spain, which were strained due to last year's request from former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the Spanish monarchy to apologize for the so-called 'conquest' of Mexico, are showing a path toward reconciliation. This has become possible following statements from Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares on Friday.

The diplomat's words, delivered Friday morning, were immediately recognized by President Claudia Sheinbaum during her press conference.

'There has been pain and injustice toward the indigenous peoples. There was injustice, and it is right to recognize it and regret it,' Albares said.

Sheinbaum highlighted these words during her speech, where she discussed the relationship between the two countries.

'It is a first step,' she celebrated from the National Palace, where she broadcast a clip of the speech in question.
