The Intercontinental Cup was an international tournament that first took place in 1960, pitting the champion of Europe against the champion of South America.
During its early editions, it was played over two legs, home and away. According to Noticias Argentinas news agency, from 1980 it adopted the format of a single final in Japan, becoming one of the most prestigious club trophies in world football.
The classic tournament was held regularly until 2004, although it had official interruptions, as it was not held in 1975 or 1978 due to disagreements between the confederations and the clubs involved.
After Porto's victory in 2004, the competition was replaced by the FIFA Club World Cup. In 2024, FIFA decided to relaunch the Intercontinental Cup, restoring its historical name but with the Club World Cup format, in which champions from all confederations play, unlike before.
For this reason, each phase played has its own cup and name, and the team that reaches the final, where the UEFA Champions League winner is already waiting, contests the Intercontinental Cup.
In that edition, Real Madrid was crowned champion, adding a new intercontinental title to its extensive trophy list and marking the official return of the trophy to the international calendar.
