In a brief statement on its official website, Barcelona stated: "We hereby announce that today we have formally notified the European Super League company and the concerned clubs of our withdrawal from the European Super League project." It is worth noting that Barcelona was one of the founding clubs of the European Super League project, alongside the Spanish Real Madrid. The European Super League is a proposed annual football tournament for European clubs, featuring 20 clubs. This league was designed to include 15 founding clubs that participate permanently, with another 5 clubs changing each season based on their performance in the previous season of European national leagues.
