Eviction of Homeless People in Barcelona

The City Council of Barcelona deploys the Mossos d'Esquadra at the airport to expel 160 homeless people, coinciding with the Mobile World Congress.

On the eve of the Mobile World Congress, the Mossos d'Esquadra carried out an eviction at Barcelona Airport at the request of Aena, with the aim of expelling about 160 homeless people living in both terminals. One of those affected by this situation was Tamara, who was found dead on a bench in Plaza de Catalunya before the police intervened.

The Barcelona City Council participated in the eviction with personnel from the Barcelona Emergency and Social Emergency Center in collaboration with the metropolitan area and the affiliated municipalities, including El Prat, where the operation took place. However, it is noted that the city council lacks the necessary infrastructure to provide them with alternative accommodation.

Although the intention to relocate more than a hundred people who had taken refuge in the airport terminals in recent months was announced, should they refuse, they would not be expelled. This deployment was carried out within the framework of concerns for safety in the area, motivated both by thieves and by the homeless taking shelter in the facilities.

The Mobile World Congress is scheduled to begin on March 3 in Barcelona, which has led to the implementation of this eviction device. According to the information provided, the operation included the presence of a social worker to accompany Aena employees and police officers. While the Barcelona City Council takes care of addressing the homeless in the city, assistance for individuals in airport infrastructure falls to the Generalitat.
