Forward and main star of the Spanish national team, Lamine Yamal, questioned the Islamophobic chants perpetuated by the national fanbase during the recent friendly match against the Egyptian national team. According to the Argentine News Agency, a group of supporters who had approached the RCDE Stadium, the home ground of Espanyol in Barcelona, had chanted 'he who does not jump is a Muslim'. In response, as a believer of the Islamic faith, the 18-year-old attacker of Moroccan descent criticized those who sang that song, calling them 'ignorant and racist'. One of the main jewels of the current European champion Spanish national team and Barcelona, Lamine Yamal, expressed his displeasure after an Islamophobic song was heard in the stands of the Espanyol stadium. The Spaniard took to his social media to affirm his Muslim identity and questioned the song, assuring that it was 'a lack of respect and something intolerable'. Additionally, the attacker admitted that he knew it was 'not personal' against him, but rather a chant against the opposing team, although he did not let the situation pass, aiming to uphold his beliefs. 'I understand that not all fans are like that,' continued the 2024 Golden Boy winner, but he concluded, 'using a religion as a mockery on a field leaves them as ignorant and racist people.' Finally, the forward commented that he believes football is 'to enjoy and cheer', without disrespecting people for who they are or what they believe in, before thanking the people who came to the stadium to support the team in their last home friendly match before the 2026 World Cup in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
