At the South Series Festival in Cádiz, which took place from October 25 to 31 in Spain, various Latin American producers presented innovative series and docuseries projects addressing different themes, from the social influence of football to the stories of refugees.
Gonzalo Lamela, director of the series "Mágico," highlighted the social impact that football can have by describing Jorge "Mágico" González as a legendary figure who transcends the sport. The series offers an intimate look at the Salvadoran footballer and was previewed with an 18-minute trailer during the festival. Lamela also presented "Capitanes de América," a series streamed on the Max platform, depicting iconic figures of Latin American football such as Carlos Valderrama and Martín Palermo. Each episode delves into the personal triumphs and challenges of these players, revealing dark aspects and life-threatening risks of the era.
Regarding another significant project, "(In)visibles" is a docuseries created in collaboration with UNHCR, focusing on the stories of refugees in Latin America and the Caribbean. The series, competing in the nonfiction section of the festival, aims primarily to raise awareness about the situation of refugees. The first season focuses on the journeys of Venezuelan individuals seeking safety in countries like Panama and Aruba, with plans to premiere in March 2025 and to work on a second and third season.
Additionally, Javier Krause presented "The Last Lap," a docuseries narrating the story of Argentine driver Carlos Reutemann and his participation in the 1981 Formula 1 championship. This project aims to convey the intensity and challenges of racing during that time, highlighting Ecocinema's vision of capturing the essence of sports from a human and authentic perspective.
