New Labor Law Promotes Organ Donation in Spain

A new regulation in Spain guarantees workers paid leave to undergo medical tests prior to organ donation. This right allows them to be absent from work during the necessary working hours to carry out these procedures. Furthermore, the regulation establishes a special temporary disability for donors, ensuring complete financial coverage during recovery after the surgical intervention.

Law 6/2024, approved in December of last year, introduces this paid leave for living organ and tissue donors. The measure seeks to eliminate economic barriers that could disincentivize living donations, thus facilitating access to transplants and improving the quality of life for those in need. This change, which came into effect on March 3rd, represents a significant modification in the current labor regulations and is aimed at individuals who need to be absent from work for medical reasons without losing their compensation.

This new legislation is expected to encourage an increase in the number of donations, reducing waiting times and strengthening the public health system. To ensure its proper implementation, it is important that both employers and employees are aware of this right and collaborate to promote a supportive and health-conscious work environment.
