Madrid Seeks to Create Literary Café Despite Unesco Concerns

Marta Rivera de la Cruz announces that Madrid's council is working to create a literary café in Cuesta de Moyano, aiming to enhance cultural preservation despite Unesco's disapproval.

The Delegate of Culture, Tourism and Sports of Madrid, Marta Rivera de la Cruz, has announced that the City Council will strive to reverse the report issued by UNESCO that advises against the creation of a literary café on the Cuesta de Moyano, which will celebrate its hundredth anniversary in the capital in 2025.

Rivera de la Cruz stated that she is in talks with the spokespeople of the groups present in the council to form a front that defends the importance of this proposal on the Cuesta. She emphasized the need for the literary café for the improvement and survival of Moyano, seeking UNESCO's support in this regard.

The delegate also mentioned that the Cuesta de Moyano could be chosen as the image of the Landscape of Light, highlighting that UNESCO's resolution is a non-binding report. Despite the recommendations of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (Icomos), the city council considers the creation of the literary café in the area crucial, in line with the desires of the booksellers and to strengthen the centennial legacy of the place.

Rivera de la Cruz expressed her opinion on UNESCO's lack of understanding of the relevance and necessity of the literary café for the future of Cuesta de Moyano. She pointed out the complexity of establishing timeframes for the implementation of this initiative, as it does not solely depend on the City Council. Amid the discussion about the ideal location for the café, the delegate indicated that attention should be focused on the Cuesta this year.
