Reflections on the Pandemic Five Years Later

Five years after the first confinement due to the Covid-19 pandemic, health professionals and citizens reflect on the profound changes in habits and the impact on various sectors in Madrid.

The lockdown order came when many were far from home. Ginés García Millán, for example, was in Mexico recording and could not return immediately. Five years later, he highlights the impact of the pandemic on changing habits and the acceleration in the implementation of platforms.

Jesús Cimarro recalls that theaters closed a day before the state of emergency was declared. Upon his return, it felt dystopian to meet his daughter in the supermarket just to see each other. The world of art, hospitality, and healthcare personnel remember those days with shock but looking forward.

For Cristina Carrero, the experience in hospitals during the pandemic was terrible in every sense. She emphasizes that, despite the situation, crowded bars have still not recovered. Pedro Casablanc sadly remembers the audience wearing masks in theaters.

The pandemic was a sudden halt for many, like Luis Gil, who was moving house at that time. He notes that there was an increase in attendance from young people at shows that were not previously common. Personally, he used to go to Plaza Mayor to check if everything was operational.

After the lockdown, openings were allowed with restrictions in Madrid, but sectors like cinema remained heavily affected. Director Mariló Martín recalls that the clinic did not close even on weekends, attending serious cases by phone. Dr. Sevilla emphasizes the importance of continuing to protect against the virus.

José Antonio Aparicio highlights the intense coordination work with different entities during those critical days. Solidarity and joint effort were key pillars during the crisis. Primary care was fundamental throughout the process, demonstrating bravery and commitment.

The gradual opening measures helped save some sectors. Despite the difficulties, the importance of reconciliation and habit changes is emphasized. Solidarity and mutual support marked the experience of those difficult days.
