The Madrid regional government launched the virtual health card in June 2020. This service allows users to quickly access pending medical appointments for the next seven days, medication prescriptions available at the pharmacy, and patient documents from the last month for direct download. Direct healthcare access, appointment management, medication information, and access to health reports and lab results have been the most requested features by Madrid residents. The figures confirm the growth of the virtual health card in recent years, after it became one of the most used digital health tools. The Virtual Health Card is gaining traction and being implemented in the Community of Madrid, where it has already had nearly 57 million accesses this year, 43.5% more than in all of 2024. Thus, a search engine and a quick menu with the most consulted resources have been added to the main page of the application: Medical Appointment, Medication, Health Card, and Reports and Results. Other new tools allow users to be informed about non-urgent surgical interventions; modify or cancel hospital appointments through the platform; receive personalized information about pollen levels in the air, and include the possibility of carrying a bone marrow donor card on their mobile phone. The Minister for Digitalization, Miguel López-Valverde, recalled that the Virtual Health Card is constantly updated based on the needs of Madrid residents. It was a pioneering initiative that would allow Madrileños to carry their card on their mobile phone and use it from that device without needing the physical one at their healthcare center. The application already has more than 3.7 million registered users and offers 68 services and 195 features. Among the services launched this 2025, the alert that notifies Madrileños that their medication has been dispensed at the pharmacy stands out. This functionality, which has sent over 14.2 million alerts, allows the patient to confirm whether they were the one who picked it up. If not, the system automatically sends an email to the inspection service to review the operation and prevent possible errors. The virtual card has also incorporated this year a tool that reminds of primary care appointments, which has sent more than 5 million notifications.
