Leadership Transition in Exceltur as Tourism Faces Challenges

José Luis Zoreda is about to leave the presidency of Exceltur after twenty-three years at the helm of the Alliance for Tourism Excellence. During this time, Zoreda highlights his achievement in placing the tourism sector on the national agenda and creating new indicators such as tourist GDP. Although his goal was the restructuring of mature destinations like Benidorm or Torremolinos, he regrets not having achieved the necessary support from governments in this task.

According to Zoreda, Exceltur aims to be selective in incorporating partners and seeks to diversify its influence beyond the hotel sector, where it has had a strong presence. His successor will be Óscar Perelli, who will take office on January 1st. Zoreda emphasizes the need for help for a tourism sector that, while it has shown excellent business results, requires external support.

The executive vice president of Exceltur, José Luis Zoreda, expresses surprise at the evolution of the data and points out that they are "going against the tide." In addition, he highlights the importance of addressing issues such as tourist housing and the lack of a Specific Plan for the sector. He believes that the Alliance should be a European reference and points to the need for a long-term strategic approach.

Zoreda bids farewell with several pending issues and achievements during his tenure, among which he highlights the social function of tourism as a job creator, especially for young people. Exceltur has also conducted impact studies at various scales, from national to local, such as the analysis of the impact of Tourist Use Housing, a problem that the organization identified in 2015.
