Málaga Film Festival Celebrates Women Directors

The 28th edition of the Málaga Film Festival highlights women's achievements, showcasing 13 films directed by women out of 22 in the competition. The event runs from March 14 to 23.


For the first time in the festival competition, female directors outnumber male directors, as stated by the director. The Official Competition section of the festival will feature 22 films in competition, 15 of which are Spanish and 7 Latin American. Among them, 'La deuda', directed by Daniel Guzmán, stands out as the opening film.

In the official competition section, there are films like 'Culpa cero' by Valeria Bertucelli, 'El ladrón de perros' by Vinko Tomicic, 'Nunca fui a Disney' by Matilde Tute Vissani, among others. Additionally, in the official section out of competition, films such as '8' by Julio Medem and 'Hamburgo' by Lino Escalera will be presented, among others.

In this edition, 260 films will be part of the festival, marking a new record. Of the more than 2,700 registered films, about 36% were directed by women. In the Official Competition section, 60% of the films have been directed by women.

During the festival, awards such as the Biznaga Ciudad del Paraíso will be presented to María Luisa San José, and a tribute will be paid to Argentine director Alejandro Agresti. Additionally, films will be screened in seven venues across the city. The festival's opening will feature the presence of numerous guests and musical performances.

The competition will host a wide variety of productions and parallel activities for all audiences. As a novelty, a new venue will be opened on La Malagueta beach for free activities. The festival will take place from March 14 to 23 in Málaga and will feature an extensive program with 260 selected films.
